TERM BY TERM CALENDAR

Term 1:

Between Weeks 6-10, we host, in the Careers Library, the liaison visits from all of the universities and our three most local polytechnics.  These are introductions to the institution and the range of courses that each provides.  Gateway and Transition Studies students begin work experience.  Judy Lawry meets with Year 13 students for the intensive 1:1 “future focus” interviews.

Term 2:

Universities and polytechnics begin their “Open Day” and “Open Evening” informational meetings which students and their parents are strongly urged to attend.  All dates for these can be found on the individual tertiary institutions’ websites and they are also always displayed in the Careers Library.

Our own annual CAREERS NIGHT in 2016 will be held on THURSDAY 23rd JUNE. This year we are working with Waiuku College to create a community event. We have had a change in name and venue. Franklin School's Career Expo will be held in the Pukekohe Town Hall and RSA, from 5.30-8.30pm.  Each year we have up to 70 different tertiary providers, private training institutes and local businesses visit our school to share what they can offer our students. This is a large event on our school calendar and we encourage students and their families, at any year level, to attend.  This is not on only an excellent opportunity for students to explore their options for when they leave school but to also learn what subjects are best taken for their chosen pathway.

Following our careers night, we also hope to provide another night for COURSE SELECTION DISCUSSIONS, with every faculty being available for students and parents to discuss the options available, prior to the actual subject selection decisions each student must make.

Term 3:

In the beginning of this term, Year 13 students who are planning to enrol for university or polytechnic, where they plan to live away from home, must apply for accommodation.  This application is completed BEFORE actual enrolment.  Students will also need to apply online for a “Common Confidential Reference” which involves a character reference written by the deans.   Halls of Residence look for all-round students who have excelled in Year 12/Level 2 and who contribute to their school and communities and who participate in a wide range of activities.  Universities pay very close attention to the credits and grades earned at Level 2 in Year 12.  Also, in this term, scholarship information is available and Kerri Hartley-Jones helps students with their personal statements and with organising the principal’s references (usually written by the deans).  Deans require at least 3 weeks’ notice in order to have a polished reference ready for a student, so students MUST plan well ahead.  Students will need to have already organised their CVs and official copies of their NCEA results from Levels 1 and 2.

COURSE SELECTION for the following year takes place during the latter part of this term, linking in with Academic Conferences.

Term 4:

At the end of Term 3 and into Term 4 the liaisons from each university and our three closest polytechnics return to help any students with course planning and enrolments.  Most enrolments need to be completed by early to mid December, unless, of course, a student is applying for degrees such as in performance music or primary teaching, which have much earlier closing dates.  Art portfolios are also due much earlier.  All of these deadlines are advertised by the particular university and it is crucial that students take responsibility for their own self-management of these.

All Year:

Pukekohe High School is working towards a whole - school approach to career education.
