Choosing a Polytechnic Institute or a University

Polytechnics offer a vast range of certificates, diplomas and degrees.

Universities usually offer only degree programmes and higher (AUT University is an exception).

Students who wish to transfer to a degree programme at a university from either a private provider (PTE) or a polytechnic are urged to communicate closely with their university of future choice when choosing papers and programmes which will pathway them beyond the diploma stage.

It is important to recognise that a degree is a degree is a degree, whether it is from a polytechnic institute or a university.  And some degrees, such as the Bachelor of Engineering Technology can only be delivered through a polytechnic.  However, it is extremely important that every student highly values the educational institution to which he/she entrusts his/her learning.  It is crucial that prospective students thoroughly explore (and visit) a range of institutions so as to place themselves most appropriately.
