About Pukekohe High School

  • Is a decile six state co-educational secondary school catering for students from Years 9 to 13
  • Is located 50kms south of central Auckland – approximately 40 minutes by motorway.
  • Has a current roll of 1600 students. The roll has increased from 1200 in 2000 and is expected to continue to increase.
  • The school serves the town of Pukekohe and its surrounding area. Approximately 30 percent of students travel each day by bus from the surrounding rural area.
  • The population of Pukekohe and its surrounding area is increasing through in-migration influenced by its proximity to Auckland.
  • Students value the many opportunities provided by a school that is expanding to meet the demographic changes and growth occurring in the local area.
  • Results on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) indicate that the percentages of students gaining National Certificates in Educational Achievement (NCEA) qualifications at all levels is above national averages and averages for similar schools. Some students achieve at very high levels academically and also in sports and cultural activities.
  • Students receive good quality support and guidance from staff to address their academic and vocational needs. They benefit from a variety of learning pathways to meet these needs. Students are more engaged in learning when teachers have high expectations of students. Opportunities for involvement in activities such as outdoor pursuits, sports, music and cultural events are enriching their school lives.
  • The school is a Te Kotahitanga School – one of a number of schools in the region implementing a particular programme towards raising achievement levels of Maori students.
  • A comprehensive professional development programme for staff has resulted in increased professional discussion and teacher willingness to trial new teaching and learning strategies.
  • While the level of care for and awareness of student’s well being is regarded as being high, teachers are working to strengthen the implementation of appropriate restorative practices and positive behaviour management strategies. This is reflected in students’ cooperative behaviour and in the positive relationships evident in classrooms and throughout the school.
  • The board’s sound financial and property management has enabled it to maintain ongoing school improvements. The curriculum is well resourced. Property developments in student support services and careers, and health and physical education are evidence of the board’s resolve to provide a high quality educational environment.
